An economical choice Rating:4 out of 5 stars As I write this, the Blue Max generator has been running for four straight days since the high winds took out power for most of southern New Hampshire on Feb. 25, 2010. It does what it’s supposed to do and has paid for itself by keeping my basement from flooding by providing power to my sump pump. I suggest spending another $300-400 to hire a licensed electrician to put in a transfer switch so you can conventiently use this to take care of your refrigerator, lights in the living room and bedroom. Had I to do it over, I would opt for a unit with 220volts to run my submersible well pump.
You need to buy a wheel kit. This unit is too heavy to move around conveniently. The directions that come with it are terrible (were written by someone in China using a chinese/english dictionary.) Write your own directions for the starting process and tape them to the unit in sealed baggie. Keep a can of starting ether around if you have trouble getting it going.
Get a Better Wheel Kit at Harbor Freight Rating:5 out of 5 stars Purchased this unit, unpacked it and found no defects as written in previous reviews. Purchased a wheel kit from HARBOR FREIGHT [...]. It is designed for a 13 hp unit, so it is much more robust than the suggested wheel kit. The HARBOR FREIGHT kit is not an exact fit, but with drilling -4- holes in the generator frame, I find works extremely well supporting this 6.5 hp Blue Max generator.
Soft to run, hard to start Rating:3 out of 5 stars For the price I paid, it’s OK, even taking in account that it’s a Chinese product. Don’t try to understand the manual, because it’s been written by people who obviously don’t have a good knowledge of English. I coined a word to describe such language: “Chinglish”. After taking it out of the box, I have it filled with oil (10W30) and gas. I had to do some efforts in order to get the generator started. One pull wasn’t enough. It started at the 9th or 10th try. The generator is, surprisingly, less noisy than other similar products and run smoothly with almost no pops and the generated voltage is highly stable. It’s a good buy, although I regret I didn’t choose a model with an electric start and wheels.
Great generator for the money Rating:4 out of 5 stars Very dependable generator. I use it to run two 500 watt halogen lights, and a coffee maker for early morning flea market set ups. This means hauling it in a pickup bed over sometimes bumpy roads. It has never had a hiccup. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the gas tank lid doesn’t totally seal and will leak with a full tank. Also there is a leak around the fuel gauge when the tank is full and sloshing. I will probably change gaskets and see if that solves the problem. Not a big issue but one worth noting just for the safety factor. I would recommend this generator to anyone for medium duty use.
I got a lemon and have to eat it! Rating:1 out of 5 stars I needed a generator as a back-up power supply in case of power outages at my home. I purchased a Blue Max 4000 several months ago, took it out of the box, and got it running. I was pleased with its quiet operation and it seemed to be working fine. I shut it off and put it away until I needed it a few months later. Again, it started well and worked fine–at first. But after about 15-20 minutes, it quit producing power. This is how it always works: it runs great for a few minutes and produces power perfectly, then suddenly the voltmeter goes to zero and there’s no power. Since by the time I discoverd this it was too late to return it to Amazon, and I knew shipping it back would be costly anyway, I tried to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. I figured it was a simple loose wire somewhere or something, but eventually I was told by an electric motor shop that for it to act like it does it must have a short in the generator windings, and the generator itself will need to be replaced. I’m doubtful I can find that part without paying almost the cost of a whole new unit. So I guess I’m left with a totally worthless generator. I would discourage anyone from buying this generator, since you might have the same bad experience I have had.
blue max generator Rating:2 out of 5 stars This product was in good condition when it arrived. Only problem was there was no instruction book. Called Amazon and they gave me a phone number which nobody ever answers. My only solution now is to repackage the generator, not easy for a single women as it is quite heavy, and send it back to Amazon for an exchange. I am not happy about the fact that there is no way to contact the maker of the product.
Cheap crap Rating:1 out of 5 stars Bought this item through amazon from Homier distributing. It didn’t work when I got it. It started up just fine, just didn’t put out any power, which is kinda why I bought it! I called Homier and after you wait on the phone for about 30 min, you may get to talk to someone, or it just may hang up on you. Well finally I get someone and they want to send me parts, cause they know what the problem is. I agreed to wait on the new parts, but they didn’t fix the problem. It took another 2 days of trying to get someone on the phone at Homier and now they will have someone call me back. It never happened. Don’t buy this generator, and don’t buy anything from Homier.
pretty quiet Rating:4 out of 5 stars I bought my blue max for $319 and it was delivered one day early. It was nicely packaged and came with the instruction book. I have been using the blue max for my travel trailer, it runs the air, frig, tv, or anything else in there. Starts right up (with full choke hot or cold) and runs as quiet as the camper next to me with a honda 2000. I am pleased with my purchase (cheap) but I plan on making another review after I put many more hours on it. It is pretty heavy to lift into the back of the truck, but I just leave it there and plug the 30amp cord into it. I had to buy a adapter at the RV store for the 30amp receptacle.
Avoid this generator-if you know what is good for you Rating:4 out of 5 stars I am very pleased with the mechanical aspects of this generator. Usually one pull is all it takes and the generator is off running. I have had minor problems with the generator such as the pull cord breaking and lately the muffler going bad. When you consider the use it is minor indeed. My problem is with BLUE MAX and their lack of customer service or rather no customer service at all. The email message they give on the website does not work and their telephone message box is always full. So forget about leaving a message and waiting on them to return the call. it is not going to happen. If you need replacement parts or need to speak to Blue Max about an item you are in trouble. Although, this is a good generator it pays to purchase locally or use a retailer that can service your generator. Local distributors will not touch this generator because it is not distributed by them. You get what you pay for. Take it from the nose that knows. Buyer beware.
Blue Max 4000 Generator Rating:4 out of 5 stars Generator started on 2nd pull, runs smooth. Easy operation except for awkward oil reservoir. Recommend buying portable cart for transport
Warranty is useless Rating:1 out of 5 stars We purchased the BlueMax generator and three months later it stopped working correctly. BlueMax doesn’t answer their phone or return calls or emails. After dozens of calls and emails to different companies that sell the BlueMax one company has tried to help us albeit at our own expense. Their warranty is useless.
Best Generator for the money!!! Rating:5 out of 5 stars We got notified by email that this Generator was on sale ($234) at the time. We needed a generator due to our home being off the beaten path. it seems every time the wind blows our town loses power so we bought this, and received it three days later. At the price I expected a lower quality unit. I was surprised to find it in perfect working condition, and not a scratch on it. I know some people had said their units were damaged in shipping, but I guess we were lucky. We live in Maine, and this is the only power we had during the recent ice storm for five days. it runs Great! Just got done using it once again for two days straight, and I’m happy to say at this point (One Year) it runs and starts just like the day I got it. Thanks so much for this unit!!!! The only complaint I have is there isn’t any 220/240 outlet, and this unit is strong enough to run 220/240. On the plus, put the choke on always to start, and you should have one pull one start – it’s not even much of a pull to start it really!
Mostly happy Rating:4 out of 5 stars I live in a semi rural area in Michigan. It seems every time we have a storm the power goes out, thus this purchase.
Product was delivered on time in perfect condition. I filled the engine with oil (not provided) and gas, gave it 2 pulls and it was up and running. Sure enoungh, one week later we lost power. Generator worked perfect–ran 2 refrigerators, furnace and some lights with no trouble for 8 hours. Remember, this is 4000 watt MAX unit, normal output is 2800 watts. Also, it is heavy (about 90 pounds)
The reason I gave only 4 stars is because it was made in China.
Nearly Perfect Out of the Box Rating:5 out of 5 stars Ordered on a Friday and received delivery the following Wednesday using Free Shipping. Delivered by a very helpful UPS driver (carried into garage for my wife) with absolutely no damage. Generator was packed very well in the box (with particle board reinforcements bottom and sides. If there would have been damage, would have been from mishandling and not poor packaging. Two instruction booklets, one for the generator and a separate one for the 4-stroke engine, were in a plastic baggie tucked under the engine. Both were written well, no typos and understandable. Got it ready to go, oiled up and gassed up. As mentioned by others, the oil filler cap is low but, I had already stopped by the local auto parts store and picked up a $2 flexible spout funnel. One little problem, the pull start handle had been installed at 2:00 o’clock rather than 10:00 o’clock as the pictures indicate. That required pulling out to avoid the protective bar cage. Fortunately, the engine fired on the second pull and purred like a kitten. Let it sit and tried again, started on the second pull again. I’m very pleased so far, without stress testing the unit. After an ice storm that left power out for a week, I bought the generator for emergencies. Had my gas furnace wired with a two-way switch and pigtail. Threw the switch to the generator, turned on the furnace fan, started without any noticeable effect on the generator. Frankly, I hope to not have to use the generator often but, I certainly feel more secure.
